The study was conducted at the Prostate Clinic, and men were eligible for inclusion in the study if they: were between 18 to 55 years of age, were diagnosed with BPH and were at least 50 years old (defined as the age of 75 years or older). Men were included if they had a clinical diagnosis of BPH by a urologist, an endocrinologist, or a urologist at the time of prostate biopsy; had a known history of prostate cancer or other cancer; or were taking medications that may increase the risk of developing prostate cancer.
Prostate biopsies were taken from men diagnosed with BPH between January 1, 1992, and December 31, 2014. The mean age of the cohort was 50.3 years (standard deviation, 13.7 years). All participants underwent biopsy within the last three years of the study, and all men were included in the study.
