Generic Propecia is a prescription medication that has been in the pharmacy for over a decade. The active ingredient in this drug is called finasteride. Generic Propecia has been available for many years. The generic version of Propecia is also available in the form of a tablet that is taken orally. The active ingredient is finasteride, which is the same active ingredient as the brand name version of Propecia, Finasteride.

Finasteride is used to treat male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It works by blocking the production of DHT, which is the hormone that causes hair loss. However, the dosage and length of use may vary depending on individual needs. Some patients may require a higher dosage of the drug.

In addition to its use in treating male pattern baldness and BPH, finasteride may also have some other effects on the prostate gland. It can cause urinary symptoms if it is taken during the menopause stage, as prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels decrease during this stage. However, it may also cause changes in the size of the prostate gland.

The most common side effects of finasteride include a decrease in libido, erectile dysfunction, and decreased ejaculatory volume. These side effects have been known to occur for some time, but they are usually temporary.

Introduction

Finasteride (Propecia) is an effective medication that is widely prescribed for treating various conditions, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). However, it has not been well-studied in the United States and there are no sufficient data to provide a general understanding of its efficacy. In this study, we investigated whether the use of Finasteride in treating BPH can be associated with an increase in the risk of developing Finasteride-associated prostate cancer (PCa), and if so, to what extent the association is due to the use of Finasteride in treating BPH.

Methods

Study design and setting

This was a retrospective cohort study in the US in 2012. Our study was part of the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT) (Propecia, Merck & Co, New York, USA) which included men diagnosed with BPH in the years prior to the start of treatment. The study was conducted at the Prostate Clinic, and men were eligible for inclusion in the study if they: were between 18 to 55 years of age, were diagnosed with BPH and were at least 50 years old (defined as the age of 75 years or older). Men were included if they had a clinical diagnosis of BPH by a urologist, an endocrinologist, or a urologist at the time of prostate biopsy; had a known history of prostate cancer or other cancer; or were taking medications that may increase the risk of developing prostate cancer.

Study population

Prostate biopsies were taken from men diagnosed with BPH between January 1, 1992, and December 31, 2014. The mean age of the cohort was 50.3 years (standard deviation, 13.7 years). All participants underwent biopsy within the last three years of the study, and all men were included in the study.

Results

Baseline characteristics

The baseline characteristics of participants included in the study are shown in. As shown in, the most common adverse event of interest were decreased ejaculate volume, urinary frequency, and decreased semen volume. The most common adverse events were decreased ejaculate volume, decreased semen volume, increased semen volume, and ejaculate volume. In total, 16 men (30.3%) developed an adverse event, with the most common events being decreased ejaculate volume, decreased semen volume, and decreased ejaculate volume. The most common adverse events were decreased ejaculate volume and decreased semen volume. All men who developed an adverse event were Caucasian, and the most common adverse events were decreased ejaculate volume, decreased semen volume, and ejaculate volume.

Contraindications

Individuals with a known history of prostate cancer or other cancer were not allowed to take Finasteride, and all men were not permitted to take Finasteride, except for patients with a known history of BPH and the following conditions: chronic prostate cancer; prostate cancer in the past; prostate cancer in the past, when it was first diagnosed; and chronic prostate cancer.

The use of Finasteride is contraindicated in men with an active prostate cancer. Men who are experiencing persistent sexual desire or loss, have difficulty maintaining or increasing an erection, and are taking other medications with the potential to increase the risk of prostate cancer should not take Finasteride. Men who have had an experience of sexual dysfunction or problems with sexual function should not take Finasteride. Men who are taking other medications, including other antiandrogens, should not take Finasteride.

Prostate Cancer Risk Assessment

The primary outcome of interest was the risk of developing Finasteride-associated prostate cancer (PCa) at a median of 12.1 years since the start of Finasteride treatment. We examined the association between Finasteride use and the risk of PCa, and whether this association persists after adjusting for age, baseline prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and risk of recurrence.
